Supermarket jobs in Galway



If you want to get experience working in a shop (ie retail), then a supermarket can be a great place to start:  supermarkets usually are willing to hire people with very little experience, and train them,.  They have  good training programmes (smaller shops can be a bit more "informal).   And they hire lots of staff.

So - where do you find supermarkets in Galway, and how do they advertise for staff?

And the following list describes  how supermarkets have looked for staff in Galway over the last couple of years.


Dunnes Stores

  • Have shops in Knocknacarra, Westside, Terryland, the city centre, Briarhill
  • Sometimes individual stores advertise for staff on signs outside the shop, and these may say to apply at the customer service desk
  • Usually, shop / deli assistant jobs  (as well head office and management jobs) are advertised on their website.

Tesco

  • Have large shops in Galway Shopping Centre and Oranmore, and express ones in Scelig Ard (further up the Headford Rd) and beside the hospital, 
  • Store / deli assistant jobs are advertised on their website - and sometimes through Indeed.ie as well

SuperValu

  • Have shops in Moycullen, Claregalway and Barna
  • Shop / deli assistant jobs  may be advertised on their website
  • They usually advertise in local newspapers.
  • This group also own the Centra brand (most stores are owned by local franchisees). Not really supermarket size, but they do have a vacancies website.   However most stores advertise with "Staff wanted" signs in the window.

Joyces   

  • This is a locally-owned supermarket chain: the head office is in Headford, and there are stores in several County Galway towns (Athenry, Tuam, Indreabhan).
  • Galway city stores are in Knocknacarra, and also ones that they took over from SuperValu / Nestors, ie the Claddagh, Doughiska, Ballybane and Oranmore
  • Shop / deli assistant jobs  are usually advertised locally in their shop-windows or in local newspapers
  • There is no on-line application system, although they say you can email your CV to their head office.

Lidl

  • This German-owned supermarket has a reputation for being very efficient, making staff work hard - but paying them well for it:  they have recently promised to pay a so-called "living wage" to all staff
  • Have shops in Headford Rd, Doughiska and Oranmore
  • Shop / deli assistant jobs  may be advertised on their website - but are often advertised on Indeed and in-store as well.

Aldi

  • This German-owned supermarket has a reputation for being very efficient, making staff work hard - but paying them well for it.
  • Have shops in Headford Rd (Galway Retail Park), Westside, Knocknacarra (Rahoon) and Oranmore
  • Shop / deli assistant jobs are advertised on their website
  • They may also advertise on Indeed


Marks and Spencer

  • There is a very small M&S supermarket in the Corrib Court shopping centre.
  • They say that they advertise jobs via Jobs.ie
  • No local advertising has been seen.


Iceland

  • Have one store, in Doughiska
  • No job advertising has been seen
  • Their website says to apply for in-store jobs by going to the shop and speaking to the store-manager
