Links about self-employment and useful tools for people starting businesses or sole-trading activities.

Why?   Many people who are looking for casual easy-entry jobs are doing other things too.

Registering a business in Ireland

Companies Registration Office - you can register either a Ltd company (complex, professional advice recommended) or just a trading name (easy)

  • If you're going to trade under a name other than your own, then you need to register that name.
  • If you have assets to protect, then a limited-liability company is worth investigating.

Business support agencies

Local Enterprise Office (aka the city and county enterprise office) - for ideas that are large, but not export-oriented.   Also supports social enterprise.

Enterprise Ireland  - for business ideas with an export focus.

Galway City Partnership - helping unemployed people start a business.

Logo design

Every business needs a "visual identity" - how you look in paper, on your website, Facebook / Twitter / etc.   You can spend huge amounts, or you can start with something simple and cheap, and upgrade your look later.

Printing business cards and other stationery

To start with, keep it simple:   print small quantities, so you can adapt your look quickly.
